In 1947 Frank Radford's father started a construction business. He built, among other projects, one of Roanoke County's first subdivisions, Blue Hills Addition, on land that is now in the city. Frank joined the business after graduation from Virginia Tech in 1958, and took over the operations six years later. His son David joined in 1988, after a successful career of his own in manufacturing, and is carrying the family business into its third generation.

Like many other ventures, the company has gone through name changes, and so now the original concern is actually two companies. Radford & Company dba Radford Homes handles construction; Prudential Radford and Associates, Inc. handles marketing, and is also a full-service real estate company. David Radford is president of Radford & Company; Frank Radford is president of Radford and Associates, Inc. Today they work together in what has been their market niche since 1988, condominiums for the active senior market. They provide more than simple housing. They provide homes and peace of mind.

The Radford companies start with the purchase of raw land, and see it through the zoning and developing process. Radford & Company takes over the site from there, while Radford and Associates turns to the task of marketing the site and selling the units. The effect is a complete circle of business for the Radford companies. Setting about a project in this manner has given them an edge in the business, since they must know at every stage of construction what the customers want and need.

Among the communities and commercial projects they have created for the Roanoke Valley are: The Glen, Glen Ivy, Heather Park, South Jefferson Place, Woodhaven Office Park, Glen Laurel Place, Cresthill Commons, Glen Meadow, South Mountain Village, the Radford Office Building, and McVitty Forest.

Radford & Company has carved out a niche market by building condominiums and homes for the pre- and post-retirement homeowner. They are recognized as a leader in the market of innovative and successful designs for the "Empty Nester" customer.

Radford & Company encourages its employees to volunteer in various community projects, such as, Relay For Life, Christmas in April, etc. In addition, our employees are active leaders in various local churches.

The Radford Family has recently donated sixty acres of open land to the Western Virginia Land Trust to hold until it can be transferred to the National Park Service. This will protect one of the "Last Chance Viewsheds" from development forever. The family has also made several donations of land to Roanoke County, including, the land for the Roanoke County Library Headquarters building, land near Cresthill Commons for the Greenway, Land near McVitty Forest for a new greenway, and has proposed donating a park along McVitty Road for a greenway header park.
